Lynn graciously opened her house last night for our Ensemble meeting. Unfortunately several members couldn't join us, so we kept the meeting brief.

Marcus introduced ideas he has been discussing with percussionist Marc Anderson for this year's more extensive and more participatory closing ceremony. More details on this to come.

A Wish From Our Eldest Minnesotan

We are pleased to announce that our oldest living Minnesotan, Ruth Anderson, 110, of Marshall, Minnesota, will be offering us a wish at our Earth Day event this year. She is also the oldest living twin in the world. We are so grateful for her participation.

Our ritual is to invite the first two wishes that fly during Wishes for the Sky's opening ceremony from the family of the firstborn in Saint Paul that morning and the eldest living person in Minnesota. Here is a short news segment about Mrs. Anderson:

The Flood Plan

Production Meeting, 3-11-10

For Thursday evening's production meeting we met with Parks staff at Harriet Island to discuss all things bamboo-related.

We chose a new location for the House to Touch the Wind (the bamboo wind-chime sculpture.) It will now be closer to the other activities, vendors, and the Wishmaking Pavilion. We're hoping that this will not only bring more people into the sculpture, but that money and energy will be saved by not having to use a generator to mic the wind chimes.

Amy from Public Art Saint Paul is using some of the left-over bamboo to design a new entrance for the Wishmaking Pavilion. She discussed some of her preliminary ideas at the meeting. Aki and Marcus also discussed how to use a few pieces of thin bamboo to create a new display for past years' wish-kites.

The tree to the left will be the new home for the House to Touch the Wind.

Bamboo Inspection

On the afternoon of Tuesday, March 2, Lynn and I headed out to the farm in Chisago County to inspect and measure the bamboo for the House to Touch the Wind. We arrived to find the bamboo buried under a mound of beautiful white snow. After an hour-long recovery effort we decided to recruit more bodies and return over the weekend.

Unfortunately Lynn and I couldn't coordinate our schedules, so Lynn and Andy returned on Friday, March 5, to finish digging out the bamboo, and Scott and I returned on Saturday, March 6, to do the bamboo inventory and condition report. After showing Peter our report, we're happy to say that we have more than enough bamboo! Thanks to everyone that helped!

The House to Touch the Wind: The Next Generation

The bamboo design team met in the pavilion at Harriet Island on this snowy winter evening to discuss plans for this year's event. Claiming that the construction of the bamboo house we have used for the last three years has become "too easy" for us, Peter unveiled his radical new design ideas for the House to Touch the Wind. He proposed that this year we build a yurt-inspired structure. Wind chimes will still hang in the house, but the new house will also include fabric design by Angie and possibly a new, interactive component.

It's hard to believe that this sky will be full of kites in less than three months!

We then spent some time examining the Ensemble and this year's Wishes by taking notes and sharing our thoughts on the following questions:

"Our 3rd annual Wishes for the Sky happened on April 19, 2009. We set out to help people make good wishes while honoring the earth and themselves. We created an enchanted experience by the Mississippi River and helped root this young tradition in our community. We reminded many public visitors how important wishing and hope are for our world. This is a work of art enacted and created by the people. Thank you for making Wishes for the Sky a success.

"The rain was wonderful. It gave us an opportunity to accept it. Of course, at first, we felt anxious and disappointed. But that feeling slowly washed away, and we were taken by how we looked at one another, reassuring each other that it was going to be ok. It didn’t matter that the numbers were modest. Everyone who was there sensed a great and different satisfaction. Each person who braved the weather became a blessing. Each visitor who came to the Mississippi on a drizzly day to make a wish was a friend, a fellow believer, a hearty Minnesotan.

"To see hope, dedication, and generosity against the backdrop of rain is very different from seeing it on a sunny day. The whole day we held the youngest and oldest wishes in our hearts, again perhaps more so than on a sunny day.

"The family of new baby Oliver wrote: 'We wish every child has a safe home and loving family.'

"Walter Breuning, 112 and the oldest man in the country, wrote: 'I just wish people would be kind to each other.'

"To enjoy our memories even more, please take a look at the list of selected wishes from the day. They are remarkable.

"The early numbers tell us that more than 600 came to our event on April 19, more than 350 kites carried wishes, and we created no more than 3 pounds of trash. Beyond the numbers, there is so much to celebrate about our day together. We accomplished something very unique, and the openheartedness at the event was magnified.

Thank you so much to EVERYONE who braved the weather to be a part of Wishes for the Sky 2009!

In spite of the nasty weather, we had 610 people come through the pavilion doors, and 359 new wishes flew on kites!

Our first wish was provided by Colleen and Timothy, parents of baby Oliver, the first child born in Saint Paul today: "We wish every child would have a safe home and loving family."

Our second wish was provided by Walter Breuning, the eldest man in America, live via telephone from Great Falls, MT: "I just wish people would be kind to each other."

Friday Before Wishes

This afternoon we set up the bike racks donated for the event by Dero Bike Racks on Harriet Island (4 just inside the main entrance and 3 by the west parking lot). Marcus, Kathleen, Aki, and I then went to the studio and began packing and loading supplies for setup tomorrow. Tomorrow morning we will haul everything from the studio to Harriet Island and, with the help of Saturday's volunteers, begin setup for Wishes for the Sky 2009.

The Minneapolis/Budapest Connection

Kathleen's brother Barry will be manning the Wish Speaking sound collage this year. He has been in contact with Christopher who originally wrote the sound collage computer program for Promises to the Earth at Wishes for the Sky 2007. The two have been sharing files and collaborating via instant messaging (Barry in Minneapolis and Christopher in Budapest). Barry has been sharing his computer screen remotely with Christopher, and Christopher has been manipulating the sound collage application on Barry's computer from Budapest in order to walk Barry through operating the application for the new Wish Speaking installation.

Volunteer Orientation/Wishes Ensemble 4-11-09

The first of two consecutive Saturday volunteer orientations was yesterday from 9:30 - 11am. Marcus, Vv, and Kathleen covered the basic information about the event, safety procedures, and field layout before volunteers split up to meet with their area captains and receive specific details and instructions for their areas. The next volunteer orientation will be the day before the event, April 18, from 3 - 4:30 pm. (We are still in need of volunteers, so please click on the link below to sign up!)

At noon the Ensemble members regrouped at the studio for the last Ensemble session before the big event next Sunday. We each went through our to-do lists for the coming week and offered each other suggestions and questions. We covered a lot of ground in this meeting and we're all very positive and excited for Wishes for the Sky 2009!

Wishes for the Sky Artistic/Production Meetings

Yesterday evening the core members of the Wishes for the Sky team met at Harriet Island in at least one of two back-to-back meetings. We made an attempt to touch on virtually every aspect of Wishes for the Sky in these two meetings. The first meeting was for the artistic team. We went over all the artistic elements of Wishes. The second meeting was for the production team. We discussed the basic schedule, map of the event, areas and captains, Saturday's volunteer orientation, etc.

Thoughts From Walter Breuning

The first two wishes flown at Wishes for the Sky will be made by the mother of the first-born child in Saint Paul on the day of the event and by the eldest living person born in Minnesota.

The eldest living person born in Minnesota is Walter Breuning. Mr. Breuning, at 112 years old, is also the eldest living man in the United States. (As a side-note: in 1913, at the age of 17, he was working for the Great Northern Railroad where he had to hide from the company's owner, James J. Hill, who didn't want any railroad employees under the age of 18.) He currently resides in Great Falls, MT.

We are all extremely honored and excited that Mr. Breuning has agreed to provide his wish for the Wishes for the Sky 2009 opening ceremony!

Here are some thoughts from Mr. Breuning from a recent PBS interview:

"That's the trouble, that a lot of people,

they forgot who they are.

You gotta be sure to like yourself.

Everybody should like each other.

Like yourself; that's life I think

all the way through.

"All in all this is a beautiful world,

and good for the people that's in it.

You know, life is a school.

Everybody learns from life what's going on.

And if they pay attention to everything that people do,

especially helping people, that's one big thing.

"A lot of people think they're born for themselves.

I don't think that.

I believe that we're here to help other people

all the way through."

Making Scrolls at Baker Park Recreation Center

This afternoon Ashley from Public Art Saint Paul and Kathleen from Wishes worked with kids at Baker Park Recreation Center to make their own scrolls. Kathleen brought one of Shen Pei's scrolls from Wishes for the Sky as a visual aid.

The kids worked in four groups. They painted patterns on large sheets of construction paper as the backgrounds for their scrolls. As we let the paint on the construction paper dry, the kids drew on large, white sheets of paper to create visual stories using markers and potato-stamp "chops." Later this week the white paper stories will be mounted to the patterned construction paper and the completed scrolls will be ready to hang.

New Scrolls

Three new scrolls have just arrived from China for display in the Wishmaking Pavilion. They were designed and inked by artist and Wishes for the Sky co-founder Shen Pei. For these scrolls she uses her own original style of lettering--calligraphy inspired by Chinese characters, but the text is entirely in English.

On this grey and dreary afternoon we met with Parks and Rec. staff at Como Park to study that location as our backup if Harriet Island is flooded on April 19. Although flooding for our event is looking highly unlikely, it's good to have Como Park as a backup just in case!

Wish-Speaking Structure

Marcus, Kathleen, and I just met with Peter and Angie at Angie's studio in Minneapolis. Peter and Angie presented their design for a beautiful new structure where guests to the event will have the opportunity to read their kite-wish into a microphone so their voice can be mixed with other recorded voices and played back as a layered sound installation of wishing. Peter is working on the basic structure--which will be made from latticed pieces of thin bamboo--and Angie is working on the outside of the structure--thin fabric draped over the structure and over the tree that will be at the center of the structure.

Wishes for the Sky Fundraiser

Immediately following today's Ensemble session, we held the Wishes for the Sky fundraiser at the home of Tim and Julie Griffin. The Griffin's home--which they graciously opened to us for the fundraiser again this year--offers beautiful views of downtown Saint Paul and of Harriet Island across the Mississippi River. Wishes Ensemble 3-29-09

For today's ensemble we focused on updates and areas where we need help from each other. As personal reminders, we opened by going around the circle and telling the group why we were here--why we chose to be a part of the Wishes team.

We then spent a couple hours going over the many updates/changes since our last meeting. We covered artistic, volunteer, financial, and field updates.

One key point that was discussed is that we still need over 100 volunteers for the day of the event. (Volunteers can sign up through our website: http://www.wishesforthesky.org/volunteer or by calling Lori Janey at 952-513-4384.)

As a break from all the seriousness, for the last half-hour we used a kite-winder to play the summer camp-esque game of throwing a ball of string to each other across a circle. Keeping ahold of the string each time it was thrown to us, we would toss it to a specific person that we would either like to ask help from or offer help to. In the end we had a beautiful web of kite string connecting all members of the Ensemble.

Bamboo Storage

This morning I helped Bob from Flannery Construction haul the bamboo for the House to Touch the Wind to Saint Paul. We picked up the bamboo from it's winter home in Chisago County and delivered it to a temporary storage space near Harriet Island. This is where it will stay until the morning of April 18th when we will construct the bamboo house. Early next week Peter and I will inspect the bamboo to see how much, if any, we need to order for Peter's/Angie's new structure. (See entry from March 6).

Children's Workshops at Barker Park Recreation Center

The first instructor will be Dave Herzig from the Minnesota Kite Society on April 1. He has a project that he has done with children many times in which they each make and "fly" a sled kite. The kites will be made from materials that correspond with Wishes for the Sky's goals for a waste-free event.

Ashley from Public Art Saint Paul and Kathleen will be working with the kids on April 7 and 10. One session will be focused on wishing, using storytelling as a taking off point. Ashley and Kathleen will bring along Wishes for the Sky kites for each child to write a wish. The other session will be focused on scrolls. For this session, Ashley and Kathleen will bring along one of Shen Pei's scrolls from Wishes for the Sky and will guide the children in creating their own scrolls.

On April 14 Lynn Hoffman from Eureka Recycling will be doing an activity related to worm composting.

Aki will wrap up the residency on April 16 by working with children to make wind chimes--these chimes will be hung in the House to Touch the Wind.

Wishmaking Pavilion

We welcome Jonathan, the new Wishes intern, to the Wishes for the Sky family. Jonathan will be working with Aki to design and prepare the Wishmaking Pavilion.

In the Wishmaking Pavilion, guests of the event will receive their kites from an elder. They can also read poetry on scrolls (poems in English that have been stylized to resemble Chinese characters) and view a display of past wish-kites.

Already hard at work, Aki and Jonathan cut down a pedestal for the Wishing Pavilion's incense burner (many thanks to the Minnesota Museum of American Art for the pedestal as well as other supplies donated to Wishes for the Sky):

For yesterday's extended Ensemble session we held a "paper rehearsal." Over the course of five hours, we thought through every aspect of the event. We helped each other add to our to-do lists to assure that nothing is being overlooked.

Today we met at Cupcake on University to discuss the design of a new structure for the Wishes for the Sky sound installation. Peter Kramer, the architect behind the House to Touch the Wind, is working on the basic structure and construction. Angie Vo, who did fabric design for last year's Promises to the Earth installation, is working on the fabric design for this installation as well.

Wishes Ensemble 2-22-09

Kathleen was gracious enough to open her home for today's "Ensemble" session for Wishes organizers. Like every Wishes Ensemble session, today began with a quick check-in to share with each other any personal news since our last get-together.

After check-in we discussed recent Wishes for the Sky updates (the new 10:30am to 4:30pm event time and the new field layout) and what affects these changes may have on other aspects of the event.

We also talked about volunteer needs for Wishes. (If you are interested in learning more about volunteering for Wishes for the Sky, please contact Lori Janey at wishesforthesky.volunteer@gmail.com)

In closing we each shared a one-word statement to express our current feelings on the planning process for Wishes. "Confident" and "hopeful" seem to be the attitudes shared by most of the Ensemble.

Wind Chime Inventory

I went to the studio this morning to take inventory of our wind chimes and wind chime supplies. We have 26 chimes, 235 hooks, about 200 feet of hemp twine, and 125 tags for the "wind chime check." The tan tags are used to label wind chimes owned by Wishes staff. The green tags are used during the event to label wind chimes that are lent to the House to Touch the Wind by members of the community. Don't forget to bring along your wind chime when you come to Wishes for the Sky!

MAJOR UPDATE: Wishes of the Sky will now be starting at 10:30 AM and ending at 4:30 PM. This means that if you are planning to be at the event for the flying of the first wish, you should now be at Harriet Island by 10:30 AM on April 19th. Every year the first wish is given to the parents of the firstborn child in Saint Paul on the day of the event.

This afternoon we met with St. Paul Parks & Recreation staff at Harriet Island. We discussed logistics for this year's event: parking, permits, scheduling, set-up, layout, etc. We also took a brisk walk around the great lawn. By the river it was quite windy and chilly, but the walk gave us a chance to envision how we can improve the field layout for Wishes 2009.
